"Red balloon tied to an anchor"

In "The house on Mango Street," Esperanza feels as if she was a "red balloon tied to an anchor." In the story "Boys and Girls," Esperanza is talking about how no one understands her. No one gets the situation she struggles with, by moving around place to place and being a loner. She feels tied to an anchor because she doesn't have true friends that  truly understand her. She wants a best friend of her own who she can have fun with.

If we were in Esperanza's situation, we would  feel the exact same way Esperanza felt, lonesome and trapped in our own homes. We wouldn't feel we belonged because we are so lonely and fearful of not making friends, just like Esperanza. The weight on our shoulders of not having that true friend who loves us, would make us feel down and in pain.

  1. Team House, I need to know who you are. Under "About Me," please just list all of you as members.

I like this blog that you all made. First, you did a good job in referring to the text directly with the use of the quotes and providing background on Esperanza. You also made a connection to how she might feel.

Keep up the good work. Each one of you should be writing blogs like this on all of the imagery related to house imagery in the novel.

Don't forget about your vignettes, too. Each one should tell the story in pictures, not opinions and facts. This is a creative writing assignment, not a piece of nonfiction.

  2. Wow! I love the picture, and also the corrections make this vignette readable. Good job! Keep going! Yay!

  3. So, who wrote this one? Can you please list the author or authors under it? Thanks! I still like it, re-reading it for the third time now.
